Leicester Forest East Residents Action Group
Welcome to the website of LFE Residents' Action Group. The Residents' Action Group was started to resist the Blaby District Council's Plans to create Lubbesthorpe New Town, a development of 4,250 houses adjacent to the Parishes of Leicester Forest East, Enderby and Braunstone Town. The development, which will be equivalent in size to Market Harborough and twice the size of the existing Leicester Forest East area will accommodate two primary schools and one secondary school. It is planned that 30% of the houses will be designated as affordable housing and the amount of traffic emanating from the site is likely to be in excess of 6,000 vehicles.
The present road structure of Leicester Forest East, Braunstone Town and Enderby are already overwhelmed by
traffic at peak periods and are subject to Air Control Management Area monitoring, because of significantly high
pollution levels, which in certain areas of the parish, are in excess of defined UK and EU pollution limits for NOx .
In September 2009, over 600 objections were received by Blaby District Council from residents of LFE and the
surrounding parishes. These objections mainly centred on traffic congestion, air / noise pollution and concern for
the loss of countryside, arable farming land and habitats for wildlife.
.
Traffic Congestion
The Residents Action Group believe that the current level of traffic on Hinckley Road (A47) has reached capacity particularly at peak hours. The ability for improvement of this highway is severely curtailed by it’s tree lined verges and numerous junctions, some of which are themselves congested and hazardous. Additionally ,between Beggars Lane and Braunstone Cross Road there are four sets of traffic lights and three pedestrian crossing. A new bridge is planned over the M1 into Thorpe Astley which will create further congestion to Lubbesthorpe Way /Braunstone Way . more
Loss of Farming Land
The land at Lubbesthorpe is valuable farming land of approximately 1000 acres. It is well maintained and productive with crops and animals feeding the national food chain. At a time when there is much uncertainty over the effect of Global Warming; the need to increase food output to supplement traditional large food producing nations like Australia, Russia and the USA is essential.
Additionally the development of this site will have a catastrophic effect on wildlife habitat and the rural walks enjoyed by so many visitors, as well as threatening the security of the medieval village. more

Air & Noise Pollution
Air Pollution Levels in LFE already exceed UK and EU guideline.and pollution levels in this Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) have, over the last four years shown little sign of diminishing despite assurance from the regulatory authorities. The pollution gases NOx are particularly high at Packer Avenue, the M1 bridge and Ratby Lane as well as the AQMA in Thorpe Astley. Medical research has demonstrated that NOx is a known aggravate of Asthma particularly in children and the additional traffic emanating from the A47 and possible future widening of the M1 can only be detrimental to health. more

LFE RAG Comment
The LFE RAG committee recognise that there is a need for housing. We are not NIMBY’s. We deplore this monstrous development because of the effect that this massive proposal of 4,250 houses will have on the surrounding parishes of LFE, Kirby Muxloe, Braunstone Town/Thorpe Astley and Enderby.
